Hi Dan How is everything? I see Team Chavel pulled it off!!!!!!!!! I guess they took it easy on Team Experience. Sorry I didn't get in touch sooner. Things have been very hectic since I moved. Hockey is a little more expensive down here and the rinks are alot further, thus at this point I'm only playing once a week. It's better than nothing. I do miss playing four times a week. I wanted to get up to CNY to play in the ABC game but my mother was hospitalized for a collapse lung within the past two weeks and depending on her recovery, I'm not sure what's in stake for the next session, but I'll keep in touch. If there happens to be a game 7, WHICH WILL BE A MIRACLE, I will definitely have to take a road trip. I know it's early, but any talk of Montreal? I know a few players down here that may want to play as well.
Take care and tell everybody I said hello!!!!

Greetings to all my friends in the FNHL. Life in Albany is going well, but I sorely miss the Friday night skates. I have some leads on some local hockey action around here, and plan to get active soon. I recently spent 4 days in Lake Placid at an adult hockey school that was superb. It was run by a bunch of Canadians, eh, and was tailored towards beginner-level players that want to improve. I had 5 hours a day of on-ice training (and off-ice partying) with NHL great Gilles Gilbert. He is an awesome guy and lots of fun. Initially, he was not very impressed by my goaltending style of flopping around the ice like an electrocuted monkey (although these antics did get noticed, and they awarded me the first star of the game for an initial scrimmage when I made a couple of two-pad stack scissor-kick arm behind my head glove saves). Gilles showed me that my over-animation was from poor positioning. He worked me through lots of drills, and continually yelled at me to "use my f***ing stick". I learned a lot. Towards the end of the program I asked one of the NHL players (Steve Laramer) that was teaching the forwards to throw some heavy at me. He cranked some slappers from the blueline. I saved some of his shots and have some wonderful bruises that I am very proud of. It was a most excellent weekend, and I plan on doing it again next year. Hope to see you all soon…

To our friends at the FNHL: Thank you so much for your continued well wishes, prayers, and the very kind delivery groceries! We sincerely appreciate you guys – and don’t know how to thank you enough.
Things are going well. We actually got out to watch most of Bryce’s football game yesterday afternoon, which is amazing considering that just a week ago, turning over in bed was a challenge. Every day seems to get better. Hopefully, surgery will not be needed and I’ll be able to go back to work in a couple of weeks. We are just taking things one day at a time. I have a brace from my neck to my waist, which although it is a real pain in the …, makes me look like a big Ninja Turtle. The kids think it’s hilarious. But I can walk around and do a lot of stuff I thought would just not be possible.
Anyway – THANK YOU. Hopefully I’ll be back on the ice soon!

Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2006
Hi, Dan & Guys at Hockey: Rich wanted me to pass along a note to first, thank you all for your kind thoughts and prayers and second, to tell you that things are coming along as best as they can right now. As George mentioned, he has a fractured L2 vertebrae (clean across the middle, he now has an “A - top” and a “B-bottom”), some smaller fractures throughout his spine, and 6 staples in the back of his head. For taking a 15 foot tumble onto pavement, we’ve been told that’s pretty good especially considering his size. He was casted and fitted for a body brace which runs basically from his chest to his waistline. Yesterday, they got him up and he took about 5 steps with support, but the Dr. is very hopeful that very soon he’ll be back up and walking on his own. He looks like one of those gigantic turtles when he has the brace on! The hope is that if the brace can compress everything and hold it straight and still, he can spend 3-6 months in that instead of facing surgery. According to the orthopedic surgeon, so far, so good. As for his concrete head – hard to believe, even with a 4” gash in his head and 6 staples, he luckily has no head or neck injuries, and didn’t even suffer a concussion. Just the cut. So, feel free to call him block head when you see him! He is going to be in Upstate probably until later this week, as we have to get physical therapy and occupational therapy going so he can get up and out of bed mostly on his own. Other than that, everything else is working well and he is in excellent spirits all things considered. He is happy to have visitors, so if you would like to stop by, he is on floor 5B, room 5116 Window. The phone # in the room is 464-9469, which you can feel free to give him a call, too. It seems to help break up the monotony of his day if he has some friendly faces, since there’s an awful lot of “hurry up and wait” in this situation.
The kiddos are doing well, they all seem to think they are on some kind of vacation at Rich’s sister’s house, and Rich has been able to talk with them on the phone every day. Bryce has been a great help trying to keep things “normal” too. So, everyone is doing as well as can be expected. A lot of people have asked for our contact info at home, so feel free to share it as needed – 4347 Church Street, Mexico , NY 13114 and home phone # is 963-1130.
Thought you all would like the update, and again, thanks so much for your thoughts and prayers. Rich misses hockey already and said he plans to be back soon – and hey, since you all are always short on goalies, George said that darn brace might come in handy for something yet!
Take Care,
Mel

Dan, George and everyone in FNHL and Sunday hockey;
I have been in Charlotte (and missing hockey twice a week) for about 6 weeks now. I have scoped out a few ice rinks. The local AA team, the Checkers, are in a new rink that opened about 2 weeks ago. It's on my list of places to check out. I've been following the FNHL web site postings, it is obvious that my speed, agility, playmaking skills and scoring punch are badly missed in the C++ and regular games. I'm still looking for a team and league that can best utilize my talents. The senior center team was full, but I'm expecting a broken hip to open a slot for me at anytime now. I turned down the Checkers, they were looking for a good wing, but I just couldn't do all the travel and keep my day job. So much for the signing bonus. This is clearly the home of NASCAR. I live about a mile from the Lowe's Motor Speedway. I can hear the cars going around the track when the Richard Petty Driving School is in session. Within 5 miles of the track are the headquarters of Hendrick, Everingham, Earnhardt, and Gnassi Racing, Simposn Racing Equipment, 3 high performance machine shops and car builders, and the Charlotte Dirt Track. Of course, everyone on the road thinks that going to work in the morning is really the practice session for the Coca Cola 600. 70 to 80 MPH on the way to work every morning, or you'll get "bump passed". Track position is everything. I had to bump pass a volkswagen the other day to get the high goove on the way to work. That lady will never be in my lane again. I'd like to thank everyone in the league for some fun times and great hockey games. I hope I can find as good a league and group of guys down here. One consolation-Syracuse had a day in the 40's last week. We were 74 and sunny. Also, my office has a great view of the Carolina Panthers stadium 5 blocks away. Keep your stick on the ice and pass the puck.

I want to thank the FNHL for allowing me to stop in and play between the pipes last week. It was great fun to be back. Albany is going well, although I have been traveling too much to enjoy. I have yet to find a group to skate with, but there is a lot of hockey out here and I'm sure I'll find something. My son has try-outs for the Capital Area Mites team this week, so at least one Rigg will be on the ice. I had been playing in the FNHL since its inception, and I really miss having Friday night hockey on the schedule. Like many, my week revolved around Friday night in Cicero. I owe a ton of thanks to George, Dan, and everyone else for the great memories. I can't wait to get back to visit again soon. PS - The next time I get to play in the FNHL be careful around the crease. My dog recently caught a squirrel in the front yard and broke the squirrel's leg. I grabbed the closest item (my goalie stick) to dispatch the rodent. I smashed its head with a Ron Hextall two-hander and got squirrel brain on the paddle. Maybe that's why the neighbors look at me funny…?

Ok, so now here I am stuck between the goal crease (yeah, I know were it is) and the blue line. Jesse's bearing down on a loose puck that's still outta my reach with George, Dwayne, Joe and Steve over on the bench playing "look-out" defense ... or at least that's how it feels. Ahhh, I'm drifting again, so to the point, my old trusty goalie pads are getting so limp that even a handful of little blue pills wouldn't perk them back up and those new, oversexed Reebok's - that are now for sale by the way - just seem to get in my way (insert another Dwayne reference here). So, I have decided to try and re-stuff the old reliables and I need all the help I can get. Popcorn Styrofoam doesn't hold up and Sears catalogs are way to heavy, if you can even still find 'em. Plan "B" - wine corks. They're light, resilient and fun to collect. Whenever you are about to toss one of those little puppies out, would you instead, please save them for a great cause. And before you ask, until my stick glove suffers the same performance dysfunction, I don't need any beer bottle caps just yet. Thanks, from an aimless and agitated, elderly caged custodian

Non-NHL teams could vie for Stanley Cup in another strike-lockout season
Canadian Press February 7, 2006 TORONTO (CP) - Chalk one up for the little guy. Two Toronto hockey buffs have won their fight to ensure the Stanley Cup doesn't have to stay in mothballs in the event of another NHL labour dispute. Tim Gilbert, lawyer for Gard Shelley and David Burt, confirmed Tuesday that a settlement has been reached with the NHL. Shelley and Burt, members of a Toronto pickup hockey league called the Wednesday Nighters, went to court during the recent lockout to challenge the NHL's claim that it controlled the Stanley Cup and could prevent it from being used as a trophy for other leagues. A court hearing on the case was scheduled for Tuesday, but Gilbert said a deal was struck last Friday. "A David and Goliath story," Gilbert said Tuesday morning. "They were doing this to establish a principle," Gillbert added of his clients. Under the agreement, the National Hockey League acknowledges that the trustees who control the prize can award it to a non-NHL team in a year where the league doesn't operate. As part of the settlement, the league will inject $100,000 a year into hockey leagues for women and underprivileged children for the next five years. The two argued that the cup's trustees - Ian (Scotty) Morrison, former head of the Hockey Hall of Fame, and former NHL official Brian O'Neill - could award it to someone else since the NHL wasn't using it. Their argument hinged on determining what Lord Stanley's intentions were when he donated the Cup as a challenge trophy in 1892 and whether the trustees overstepped their bounds when a 1947 agreement (revised in 2000) handed its control over to the NHL. The settlement does not mean the trustees have to award the cup in the event of another work stoppage. An NHL spokesman declined comment Tuesday morning.

Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman and Wayne Gretzky are standing before God at the throne of Heaven. God looks at them and says: "Before granting any of you a place at my side, I must first ask you what you believe in." Addressing Lemieux first He asks, "What do you believe? " Mario looks into God's eyes and states passionately, "I believe hockey to be the food of life. Nothing else brings such unbridled joy to so many people, from Moscow to the bright lights of New York. I have devoted my life to bringing such joy to people who watch us play." God looks up and offers Mario the seat to his left. He then turns to Yzerman, "And you Stevie Y. What do you believe?" Yzerman stands proud and firm, " I believe courage, honour and passion are the fundamentals to life and I've spent my whole playing career that provides a living embodiment of these traits." God, moved by the passion of the speech offers Yzerman the seat to his right. He finally turns to the Great One, " And you Wayne. What do you believe?" Wayne says smugly, " I believe you are in my seat."

Okay, here is my idea for the sixth Friday. Everybody bring a $5.00 bill. That's $110.00 per game. With that we get a ref, a linesman and a time keeper. Leave the teams the same. It's probably been a while since a lot of us have skated with a ref, and some may never have. Structured Friday nite all star hockey? Why not?!?. Besides, it will give us a chance to bitch at someone besides the opposing team! Three 15min. stop time periods just like the pro's (or the kids!) Real penalties, real icings, and yes, real faceoffs. Think about it. This could be fun!

A possible alternative would be to match two of the teams as usual, like Blue vs Red, but switch 5 of the players from each team to the opposite team. It could be an entire forward line and a defensive pairing, or just 5 from each regardless. But they would be an even switch if possible, so you would switch an A for an A, a C for a C, and so on, so the talent level would remain even between the teams. You could call it the AC/DC game, since half the guys switch to the other side.

The auction will be held during the first week of November at: http://auctions.nhl.com/ There are several jerseys and hockey memorabilia being auctioned there right now, some seem kinda pricey while others went for a steal (like autographed jerseys for about what you would pay for a replica). I'm guessing that this is a full-time auction website and that the benefit auction is a special event. With that many jerseys going up for sale, it may be worth checking out to try to snag a deal.

Subject: FNHL to play for the Stanley Cup?
Dan: I thought this was interesting, and may also pertain to "Friday Nighters".
Dave Rigg
TORONTO -- A group of amateur hockey players is taking the NHL to court to determine whether somebody can play for the Stanley Cup. The 'Wednesday Nighters' filed a claim in Ontario Superior Court on Wednesday asking it to clarify the terms under which Canadian Governor-General Lord Stanley donated the Cup in 1892. The NHL season was canceled in February amid a labor dispute.
"The fact that the NHL has suspended its play this year doesn't mean that Canadians and others don't have the right to compete for the Stanley Cup," said Tim Gilbert, the groups' lawyer.
Gilbert said Lord Stanley's intention when he donated the Stanley Cup was to have teams compete for the trophy every year, and a labor dispute shouldn't prevent that from happening.
He hopes the court will force Stanley Cup trustees Brian O'Neill and Ian Morrison to find teams to compete for the Cup.
"We do not take this lightly," said Gard Shelley, an amateur hockey player in his mid-50s. "The Stanley Cup is the greatest sports trophy anywhere, ever. It is unique and a huge part of our culture and heritage."
The 'Wednesday Nighters' initially offered to play for it themselves -- white jerseys against black -- but eventually decided that competitive teams should play for it. They don't even use goalies in their league.
"This did start off as an amusing idea after Wednesday night hockey one night," amateur David Burt said. "I'm frustrated as most hockey fans are that the NHL and the NHLPA lost the season. I don't know which side of that issue I'm on. I'm just frustrated with the fact that there is no hockey being played. I don't think that's what Lord Stanley intended. I think he had a higher purpose for his donation."
Current Canadian Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson suggested in February that if the NHL won't award the Stanley Cup this year, then it should be the top prize in women's hockey.
O'Neill declined to comment Wednesday but said the claims would be contested.
In February, O'Neill said there was no legal way the trophy could be awarded for another competition under an agreement with the NHL. He said it would only be possible if the NHL decided it didn't want the Stanley Cup anymore, or if the league went out of business.
The 'Wednesday Nighters' application is scheduled to be heard by the court July 18 -- well after the Stanley Cup is usually awarded -- but Gilbert hopes to have the date moved up to sometime in May.
This could be just the second time the Stanley Cup isn't awarded. The last was 1919, when a flu epidemic forced the finals to be called off.

We have our 2005 Crunch Classic coming up on Saturday, March 12 at 3:00 p.m. Participation in the Crunch Classic is $250 and you receive 25 tickets (which you can sell at $10 a piece so it costs you nothing to participate in the game). You also get a roster spot, two complimentary tickets to the game against Rochester that night, a Crunch sweatshirt, and an invitation to the post-game reception at the arena. If you're interested in playing, give me a call at 473-4444 ext. 141 or email me at tcross@syracusecrunch.com. A few FNHL players are already involved including Dave Cavallaro and Chris Rousseau. And just think, what's better than lighting up Rouss like a Christmas Tree on the ice of the War Memorial?
Hope to hear from a few guys who want to get in on the action.
Thanks!

Dan Just wanted to thank everyone who was there to help last Friday night after the injury! I do not recall a lot of what was going on after I was down but I know there were a lot of guys there helping out and I would just like to thank all those guys for the help. Everyone knows who they were, so thanks to all those guys! Also I’m glad Rich was there because I don’t know of many guys who could haul someone up by the pants in one motion onto a stretcher without dropping them. Thanks Rich. So far I know the shoulder was completely dislocated, not a fun injury. They managed to pop that back in after some time. That has a 6-10 week recovery before any overhead motion is allowed. The other injury to the knee is unknown yet. Still trying to get a specialist to determine the extent of that injury. So needless to say will be out for some time. Seeing that Its not easy to type one handed I will get going. Again, thanks to the guys who were there to help and everyone who has called.

Subject: FNHL to replace the NHL (post on website)
Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2005 15:53:38 -0500
Now that the NHL has cancelled it's season, perhaps it's time for the FNHL to fill the void. We could become a barnstorming league, and play one weekend in each NHL city. For the ABC week, the A players could wear the home NHL team's jerseys, and play the C players who could wear that teams favorite rival's jerseys. It would be like the Harlem Globetrotters against the Washington Generals, with the home fans going home happy. Maybe we could get a major sponsor like Labatt's, and our own line of clothing like And-1 did for basketball. How many people are saying today, F-NHL! They'd love to have a shirt or jersey that expressed their emotions. Don Cherry would be all over us on Hockey Night in Canada. We have to jump on this quick before someone else gets the idea.

Brian.....Nobody wants your smelly @$$ equipment. Ian that fight was awesome!!!!! A skills competition is a great idea. I think we should definitely do it. One thing though......Nick why does it have to be Rouss in net with no pads?

Subject: Skills Competition?
In looking over the poll ideas and seeing that some players are challenging each other to skating races, what does everyone think about holding a skills competition like at the NHL all-star games? Why just ask everyone who's the best when we can settle it on the ice? We could do them as part of the ABC games so each level of player is represented and/or have a league-wide one some time before or after those games.
Would be easy to get a stopwatch to time fastest skaters on lines and circles. Could also throw in a shooter tutor for an accuracy contest and have goalies for breakaways, 2-on-1's, etc. Don't know how we could judge a hardest shot contest though, maybe just stick Rouss in net with no pads and compare bruises.
It might be a fun thing to do on an annual basis. Maybe we could get some separate ice time for a skills contest, possibly followed by a co-ed game or family skate, then do a league banquet catered by Dinosaur at the bar or somewhere else if we need more room.

Hey Dan,
A buddy of mine from Canada sent me an attachment of one of the best hockey fights I have seen in a while. I thought you and some of the FNHL guys might get a kick out of it. Put it on the web page if you want.

It is with deep regret that I have to send this e-mail to the FNHL notifying you of my decision to disallow Bob LaBarre any further play time with a bunch of obvious "bullies" who refuse to pick on someone their own AGE !!! And this hurts me just as much as it does "baldy" because it means I'll have to put up with his sorry ass even more hours in a week now (and that's NOT a pleasant thought) !! And let's face the facts guys ... he's no Brad Pitt in the looks dept. anyway - but with each new batch of cuts & stitches - it only serves to make matters worse.
So THANKS ALOT FNHL ... you could have thought about what you'd be doing to ME when you chose to beat the snot outta the old guy. And I'd appreciate a phone call from someone if he shows up on Sundays and/or Fridays ... because you know he's gonna try to ignore my authority in this decision (being the bullhead he is !!) Regretfully - Patty
P.S. Never mind !!! After additional consideration, I can't possibly deal with him being home any more than he already is ... sorry, but you're stuck with him.

Subject: Dark Injustice Using Trick Photography
I want to point out the recent injustice that was performed with the aid trick photography. The game action photos include two shots of me in a compromising position of what appears to be some type of hooking infraction (pages 3 and 4, bottom row, center frame). Those that know me realize that (as a finesse player) I would never reach around to hook an opponents stick. Somebody must have tampered with the photographs....
